In the framework of a Nautical Club activity, I introduced youngsters from French disadvantaged communities to sailing. The aim of this program was to allow them to have a first experience with the sea and to learn values such as order, respect to the rules, humility and teamwork.
The New loveLife Trust (loveLife) was formed in 1999 as a private public partnership between the South African Government, private sector and various non-government organisations. Over the years, the vision of the organisation has moved from HIV awareness, education and inspiration for healthy living to being a leader in Youth Health promotion. Health is defined as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being“ (www.who.int/about/mission/en).The loveLife program offering consists of various programs under three main pillars namely:
Healthy lifestyle
Sports and Active lifestyles
Youth Leadership Development
loveLife seeks to promote social activism for healthy living, active lifestyle and HIV consciousness among young people, through information, education and awareness campaigns, behavioural change programmes, and youth development initiatives.
loveLife has presence in all nine provinces of South Africa and reaches on average 1.2 million young people between the ages of 10-24 each year.
The Boy Child Programme (TBCP)
The aim of Boy Child Programme is to assist boys to make positive life choices when it comes to their health, their future and the way they respond to situations that life throws at them.
The Programme has 3 main focus areas:
Health Promotion
Violence Prevention including Gender Based Violence (GBV)
Youth Leadership Development
loveLife understands the importance of having boys and young men as an important stakeholder when discussing issues of health, violence ,wellbeing and those affecting young women and girls. It is a known biological fact that young girls do not impregnate or inflicting GBV on themselves. To address these issues, everyone who is part of the challenge needs to participate in its alleviation.
The programme aims to challenge:
certain gender norms and behaviours that perpetuate and even intensify violent behaviours towards women and girls by boys and men.
violence by men and boys towards their male counterparts.
When you live in a place where the only thing you can think of is ‘how to survive?’ Sport is a way out from all the anxiety and stress. This little moment during the days, there is a short period where all sorrow makes space for playing, having fun, and kindness.
I believe that everyone should have access to S4D research & materials to empower their initiatives, to bring wellbeing, peace, social inclusion, gender equity and work towards the SDGs in their communities!
Today I raise the #WhiteCard to celebrate the positive & constructive power of sport !
Members of the group representing all the karatekas in the world are spearheading Karate’s participation in the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP).
As a demonstration of these Karate Values, the Athletes’ Commission of the World Karate Federation is joining the campaign as the representatives of all the Karate athletes are holding their white card.
Douglas Brose of Brazil, Antonio Diaz of Venezuela, Rio Kiyuna of Japan and Vassiliki Panetsidou of Greece are posting their pictures with the #WhiteCard. The commission is also formed by Nguyen Hoang Ngan of Vietnam and is headed by chairman Davide Benetello of Italy. A former World champion and Karate legend, and member of the WKF Executive Committee, Benetello is leading the celebrations of the #WhiteCard showcasing Karate’s strong ties with social issues.
“Karate may be a fight sport but we are constantly sending the message that respect and friendship are among our strongest values. This is evidenced by the ‘Rei’ (bow) that we always do before and after each bout and by the fact that we always embrace our opponent once that the fight is over,” said WKF Athletes’ Commission chairman Davide Benetello.
“This season is extremely important for the Karate world since we are heading to our debut in the Olympic Games, and we have our World Championships later this year. It is our goal to spread a message of peace around the world and for that, we have all the members of the Athletes Commission who represent so many different countries and different continents actively involved in this mission,” adds Benetello.
