Mahdi: kick-boxing to be part of a resilient community

Mahdi: kick-boxing to be part of a resilient community

Mahdi Khawari was one of the K1 coaches of the association Yoga and Sport with Refugees, which works on the island of Lesvos, in Greece.

Mahdi spent about two years in the refugee camps of Lesvos, where he joined the association for a year to share his knowledge in the practice of K1 with other residents.

He is now living in Berlin where he continues to box regularly.

Story:
“When I work out, I get rid of the negative energy. Afterwards, even if there is fighting, drinking, drugs, or noise at the camp when I’m trying to sleep, my body is so relaxed.
This is my family. People come together to keep up their motivation and energy.
My team stays in touch even though they’ve left the island. We follow each other on Instagram and send pictures on Whatsapp. Wherever they go, they send pictures and ask how things are at the camp. We talk about how nice it would be to practice together. We’re friends for life.”

Nasroolah: sport to find a purpose

Nasroolah: sport to find a purpose

Nasroolah Jafari joined the Yoga and Sport with Refugees kickboxing classes when he was a resident of the refugee camp of Lesvos, in Greece. Having joined the association two years ago, sport has allowed him to get out of the camp environment and find a purpose; now he wants to bring more hope to the children. He wants to give them the opportunity to have a normal life.

Nasroolah has now received his papers and is living in Athens, where he is still taking sports classes with Yoga and Sport with Refugees.

Story :
“I had no opportunity to do sports in Afghanistan—not even the internet in our poor area. Now I run and do kick-boxing. Knowing Estelle and Yoga and Sport With Refugees saved my life. The English I’m speaking I learned from these people. I come to stay physically and mentally healthy. I always dreamed of having the opportunity to do sports. Why waste my time in the camp? I can come and grow up and do good things. I can get to know more people. I can have more social connections. I have done it for over two years. I’m very happy with that.”

Equestrianism to mobilise opposition to slavery in mounted sports

Equestrianism to mobilise opposition to slavery in mounted sports

I have been a passionate supporter of UNICEF’s work to save and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable children since I was a child myself, one of the legions of Canadian pupils who carried the black and orange UNICEF Hallowe’en donation boxes.

When I became a member of Canada’s national Equestrian team, I donated my team’s naming rights to UNICEF, rather than auction them to a corporate sponsor.

By riding under UNICEF’s banner, I hoped to lend prominence to UNICEF’s work against the enslavement of children in mounted sports.

Ultimately, UNICEF succeeded in pressuring the UAE to ban the exploitation of children as camel jockeys. The children already held by the industry were returned to their families and their countries of origin.
