A "Digital" International Day of Sport for Development & Peace
04 April 2020 00:00 - 07 April 2020 06:00
21 civil society organizations active in the Sport for Good international movement, representing 11 countries, unite and invite you to join forces ONLINE in spreading the universal message of a better-world-for-all, that we celebrate annually on April 6th to commemorate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
Sport as a universal language can be a powerful tool to promote peace, tolerance and understanding by bringing people together across boundaries, cultures and religions. Its intrinsic values such as teamwork, fairness, discipline, respect for the opponent and the rules of the game are understood all over the world and can be harnessed in the advancement of solidarity, social cohesion and peaceful coexistence.
Proposed by the United Nations in partnership with the International Olympic Committee and the support of the Peace and Sport Foundation, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was launched on 6 April 2014.
This date, April 6, commemorates the inauguration of the first modern Olympic Games, in Athens-Greece in 1896. This is why we are also proud that the campaign presented here, to digitally raise our voices for Peace and Sustainable Development, was initiated by a Greek partner: Οργάνωση Γη-Organization Earth through its #HopeSports program.
In 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we won’t be able to celebrate April 6th with public activities, together with our team-mates, supporters, partners and the beneficiaries of our programs out in the fields and pitches, to engage society-at-large.
This year we #stayathome, but we invite the world to continue, by all means, spreading the word regarding the importance of sport in fostering social inclusion, reducing inequalities, fighting any kind of discrimination, promoting sustainable communities and to now more than ever support climate action, as well as to learn more about the much related principles of health and wellbeing for all!
Through Social Media, every day from April 4th until April 7th, we leave our personal or collective message, as individuals or as organizations of Civil Society supporting the #IDSDP2020 campaign which will send a much needed message of solidarity that highlights the positive impact of sport on society, even during these challenging days.
Share your message of unity as a contribution to the cause. Don’t let anything prevent us from celebrating #SportforChange on April 6th 2020!
