Klaus Stärk has been running a long-term project in football in Namibia since 2008. The project is part of the International Sports Promotion supported by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany and the German Olympic Sports Confederation. The idea is to help a developing country to expand and strengthen a particular sport. Klaus Stärk has been doing this successfully for many years. One main focus of the project is the promotion of women’s football.
On the occasion of the first International Day of Sport for Development and Peace the Women’s Football Department organized a tournament for U15-girls’ teams on 6 April. Seven Teams and around 140 girls competed in this tournament. In the end the girls from the junior selection of the NFA beat in an exciting final the Eldorado Secondary School selection by 1:0. Alongside to the sport the participants got informed about topics concerning the “Galz and Goals” project which has been implemented by the Namibian Football Association and UNICEF in 2009. The idea of “Galz and Goals” is to empower girls to live a healthy and independent life through their participation in football. In several workshops the girls got to know their strengths, learned to take on responsibility for their lives and how to avoid risk behaviors. The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was a good opportunity to motivate more girls in participating football and the “Galz and Goals” project.
