Special Olympics Hellas promoting UN Day of Sport for Peace and Development in Athens

Special Olympics Hellas will celebrate this day with a variety of sports and non-sports events
1) The International School Sport Federation (ISF) & the City of Athens will organize from 31/3/2014 – 4/4/2014 the 1st World School Sport Educational Games
The first ISF School Sport Educational Games, endeavor to define ISF philosophy, to show that the objectives of the international School Sport Federation by far exceed organizational and administrative purposes. The major concern and responsibility of the ISF is education in and through sport.
The School Games provides a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sports than ever before
1st World School Sport Educational Games will provide students with the opportunity to participate in regular challenging physical activity, and develop an understanding of fitness for life and the benefits of a balanced healthy lifestyle. Skills, concepts, knowledge and attitudes are developed through progressive practices and structured games, designed to ensure maximum participation by all.
The School Sports Educational Game can form the backbone of a community, and ISF is driven to promote sports to further community spirit and bring peoples together. During the visit, the delegations will have the opportunity to visit the city of Athens, the Athens 2004 Olympic Sport Complex, the Municipality of Athens Youth Camp, the Marathon Tomb, the Start Venue of the Athens Classic Marathon Race, and the Marathon Museum. This initiative aims to increase consistently the number of young people developing sport as a habit for life.
Also, City of Athens will sing with ISF a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize collaborative initiatives between the City of Athens and ISF.
Special Olympics Hellas have been invited by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs to participate with 8 attendants (six athletes and two coaches/physical educators) and 15 Special Olympics Hellas Volunteers in above activities. Students and Physical Educators from all over the world will have the opportunity to learn about the UNIFY® Project to foster acceptance, respect and youth leadership within their school communities and to help facilitate understanding of the potential for students of all ability levels, to be actively engaged.
2) On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Peace and Development, 6th April, the Municipality of Athens will organize with cooperation of Special Olympics Hellas, a Cycling Event under the title: The Athens by Bike
At the same time and in the Framework of the campaign " UN decade of action for road Safety 2011-2020 " a seminar will be also conducted by Special Olympics Hellas to which 100 Special Olympics Cycling Athletes and 50 partners and a lot of volunteers will participate, with main theme: Make Road Safe for Cyclists . Following the seminar a cycling road race will take place, with all athletes, partners and volunteers participating,
With above events the City of Athens and Special Olympics Hellas aim at contributing to the further development of the Special Olympics movement in Greece and a positive attitude towards people with intellectual disabilities.
